Septic tanks collect organic waste from toilets, sinks, showers and other areas of a home. Please read below for some of our practical tips to keep your septic tank in good condition and working for a long time:
Never neglect the frequency of emptying your septic tank. Once every two years is not a luxury and is the law!
Keep the amount of cooking grease and oil sent to the septic tank to a minimum.
Avoid using chemical cleaning products that could end up in the septic tank.
Do not use sludge-reducing additives.
Install a pre-filter to preserve your septic field.
Clean the prefilter every six months to avoid blockages.
Never use a garbage disposal in sinks.
Use fragile toilet paper.
Limit and space your water consumption (bath, shower) and that of your household appliances.
Never put in your septic tank: female tampons, condoms, Q-Tips, wet wipes, diapers, cat litter, etc.
Keep the septic tank covers accessible at all times (no dirt, patio, snow, etc.).
Before winter sets in:
Check that the level in the pit is below the inlet and outlet pipes.
Clean the prefilter.
Flush the toilet to make sure everything is flowing into the septic tank.
Identify the covers with stakes.
Make any necessary repairs, such as plumbing leaks.
Do not remove snow from the surface of the septic tank and leaching bed.
